The rhythmic sound of a beating heart breaks the silence in the birthing room at Southwest Washington Medical Center. Inside, Geoff and Tracy Varney of Salmon Creek hold each other in preparation for their roles as first-time parents. “We’re just anxious and nervous right now,” she says. “We mostly just want to meet the baby,” he says.

After 17 hours of labour, Tracy’s doctor decides it would be best if the baby is taken by Caesarean section. They agree, and Geoffrey Sayre Varney Jr. is born at 5:17 p.m. Oct. 22. He weighs 7 pounds 8.2 ounces. “It was amazing when they pulled him out,” Tracy tells her mother from the birthing-room telephone. “I couldn’t believe it was really him.” A Caesarean wasn’t what the couple expected. They were planning an entirely different experience. “I envisioned him coming up and being put of my chest,” Tracy recalls. “That was like the sacred spiritual moment that I had envisioned over and over.”
