POW: Levi van Veluw

Artist, sculptor, and photographer, Levi van Veluw, has what many would call a strange canvas … himself. He covers his face in surface materials he wants to disappear into. He uses many different kinds of surface materials. Some of the material he chooses are wood, tile, ballpoint pen, grass, or even shrubs. He also creates small vignettes, or scenes, like a railroad car going around his head.

Through Van Veluw’s photography and art he explores what can be viewed as our shifting identities, as well as touching on themes of different roles we play in society and how art can transform us into something entirely different.

He uses texture by covering his face/body in surface materials. He is trying to blend in or stand out. Maybe feathers because they would create an airy feel. I think this stye of art and photography is very creative and interesting. Madman, genius he is somewere inbetween.

Van Veluw uses texture in his photos by adding different things to the body of the photograph. I think he is trying to tell us that many have different sides to themselves. I would use paint, m&ms to stick on my face, and other objects that bring out texture because I thought it would be cool to use a candy object to make it unique. I think that Van Veluw is a very unique artist with his photographs, he shows texture in so many different ways that it gives us an idea of what to do for our photo challenge this week. I think Van is a genius for being able to come up with this idea of doing the many ways to use textures.

Levi uses texture in a way that models a character rather than just normal eviroments. i can’t tell what the main picture is but i can only asume that life can come from something without any. i would use a combonation of materials, maybe a cross between bone, and steel, potentially my birthstone. this is remarkable and i can’t tell if this is paint, actual material, or computer edited. Levi is a creative person and i wish i had some evidence of art inside myself like he does.

Van Veluw uses texture in a unique way that’s not usually used. We don’t normally see a face have the texture he uses so it’s interesting to look at. He has meaning behind every picture and that makes it more appealing. I think I would use materials to make a story and I would let something in the moment inspire me to find those materials. I like his photography. I think it’s very creative, unique, and interesting. He is somewhere in between.

He uses everyday things wood or rocks to hide himself and he brings texture to himself with different objects. I think he is trying to hide from something like he being covered gives him a sense of security. I would cover myself in blanket fur because i feel most secure when tucked into a blanket. I like his photography and work its very different i love things i never thought of or seen before. He is surely a genius, art work is never crazy or mad.

He uses it as a way to sculpt his art. Using the human face is rather difficult to do when you are using the objects he’s using. I really think he’s doing this just to mess with our minds in a way? I wouldn’t expect him to actually put all that stuff over his own body. I thought he’d use a mannequin instead. If I were to do this, I would use flowers. I really love the idea of using a bunch of rose petals of different colors. His art is actually beautiful! I’m really amazed by his talent and unique perspective. He’s honestly a genius! I love this a lot.

by using peoples bodys/heads it brings out the pic shows its texture.
he trying to show that everyone is differnt and we all have the same symecritcal face.
i would find something that looks like wood and put that on my face i think it would be a vary nice effect.
I think his work is differnt in a good way really shows a persons face each pic of his has a face but is stll vary differnt than the other one is.
i think he is both because he has to be a mad man to come up with this type of idea but also a genius for making ach face so vary differnt than the last.

Van Veluw puts textures of natural and common things like wood, trees, and rocks, but he puts these textures on something that is not natural for the surface.
I don’t really know what he is trying to communicate, but the pictures do look very interesting and I would like to know what he is truly saying.
I would use scrap metal and nails something with a manly rusty look.
His art is very interesting because you do not see many people trying this because its really hard to do.
I think he is a little bit of a madman because he is willing to take countless hours just to wrap some ones face and add in digital effects, but since he is willing to be different and make interesting pictures he is mostly a genius

By taking different objects like grass or rocks even hair that you wouldn’t think of and you can tell its texture by the detail of the shapes each single object makes. To me that different settings make different emotions even if it’s the same face, the objects on the face make it unique. Flowers, rainbow or colorful coral that goes at the bottom of the fish tank and even a disco ball reflection plastic. That he has mad skill and I love that he is different and doesn’t have to tell his story through the outside world/ a waterfall with people in the back having a pic nick, no, all he needs is taking piece of the outside world and blending them together to form himself. I think he is equally both, a genious because I would of never thought of experiencing photography like that which is super cool and a madman because how does he not get that stuff in his eyes?!

The way Van Veluw uses texture in his photographs is by covering his face into many different kinds of surface materials such as wood, rocks and grass. What he is trying to communicate is his life stories and how he wants to blend in or stand out or disappear into. And the different aspects and roles we play in society. In I tried to do the same idea I would use materials that would represent my life or personality. Like feathers because I wanna be set free and fly kind of like a bird from society and its expectations My opinion of Van Veluw’s photography and art is that it’s really interesting and different in a good way. I think that he’s both, a madman and a genius because the art is beautiful, crazy and unique.

He uses texture by making each picture look like there are things coming out of the body. I think he is trying to communicate different elements of texture through a person. I would cover my face with hair if I did this because it looks like a caveman and I think it’s unique. My opinion is that it is a little boring as it is the same just with different textures. I think he is a madman.

He uses props to emphasis the texture along with having the same face in every photo. He is trying to in some of the photos make it seem like the texture is CGI, and we can see that most of them are not. I would just do it in oil paint, because it would only cover my face. Some of the photos look creepy due to the fact that his face is covered and we only see the parts that are outlines of his face, if we saw eyes in other ones they could not be as creepy. creepy as unnatural.

-How Van Veluw uses texture in his photographs is by using diferent elements such as bark on a face to show the roughness it contains.
-What Veluw is trying to communicate in his pictures are the different textures that surround us.
-The sort of materials I would cover my face with if I tried this same idea would be clay. I chose clay because it could be either really smooth or really cracky.
-When I first saw Van Veluw’s photography and art I thought it was kind of weird, but as I looked at more of his photographs they become more and more interesting and cool.
-I think Veluw is both a madman and a genius because he has to be a madman to create such unique and interesting photos however, these photos are genius.

Adding textures to his photos makes boring, portrait scenarios seem much more interesting. My guess is he is trying to humanize earth and the elements by putting them on a humanoid sculpture while also putting them in average scenarios. Mostly very ethereal materials, ones that would seem too perfect, therefore resulting in a picture than not only invokes a mood/emotion upon the audience, but also elaborates upon how robotic routine can be. I think Veluw is fairly competent at making pictures, they’re generally pretty spot on in striking a creepy emotion. I can’t necessarily say whether he’s a genius or not; there’s no telling whether he purposefully composed all his shots the way he did or whether he did it all in the sake of a “cool” image, which is ostensibly facile.
